Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2.
Sad news, Steve Wright is leaving radio 2. One wonders if the 'show' will move ever closer to radio 1, Scott Mills being ex radio 1.

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
So was Steve Wright 1980 to 1995 ISTR
I usually flip over to R2 to listen to Steve Wright so I can avoid GQT on R4 Friday afternoons on my 2 hour commute home. Cheers Mike T |
Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
Steve Wright was on Radio1, when it was worth listening to. Radio1 is not what it used to be.
Steve Wright is actually not leaving Radio2; he will still continue with his 'Sunday Love Songs' This no doubt means that the 'Non-Stop Oldies' will come to an end; and there will be next to nothing on radio worth listening-to. |

I do not normally post on 'comments' type threads, but
A good move by the BBC. Nothing ever changed from day 1 with S.W... |
Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
On R1 back in the day, for all it's silliness, his afternoon show was a breath of fresh air. More of a variety show than pure disc jockeying, and set slightly apart from the 'smashy & nicey' influence. The comedy sequence i remember most is the faux hollywood film trailer mini-saga, using an Arnie voice mimic:
'Arnold Schwarzenegger bought a car- but didn't like the colour' (he turns up at the showroom with an Uzi, you can imagine the rest) I still have most of them on audio tape.. Dave |
Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
I remember the horrible voice and Jervace the hairdresser. On his morning show, in the mid nineties, was the farting news agent :-D

Perhaps it will keep Mills out of Ken's slot...

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
Couldn't they manage to get rid of Jeremy Whine's misery slot somehow in the reorg?

John Dunn as presenter of the drivetime show for 22 years was my favourite.

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
In my mind I'm still 22 and Radio 2 is for old folks. Even the presenters go there when they get old. Mind you, I remember when Jimmy Young was on Radio 1 :)

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
John Peel once described golf as 'the antechamber to death'. I'm afraid I'm with you, Aub, in feeling the same way about Radio 2 ;D. Even now.
When I was a child my step-father used to love it though. He was a particular fan of Sing Something Simple. Cheers, GJ |

I have only heard Scott Mills presenting Eurovision semi-finals (which he does well but nowhere near as good as Terry Wogan did) so don't know how he will be in that slot on Radio 2. Many Radio 2 presenters were previously on Radio 1 though. The general plan seems to be to move listeners and presenters to Radio 2 as they become too old for Radio 1's target market. Then onto BBC local radio once too old for the Radio 2 target market. My usual choice in the car and at home while working is presenter-less DAB stations, mostly Heart 80s. Just plays away in the background, which is probably exactly the intention of that type of station. |
Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
Am I alone in not listening to radio. 1,2,4. Just radio 3 no inane chattering, o me me me DJ’s just decent assortments of classical and jazz. Only rarely do I find the content not to my liking.

I don't like R1 or R2 as I like listening to music.

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
When Jimmy Young came across some unfairness, bad luck or other trouble in the course of his normally cheerful show, he worked to get someone to help out. Jeremy Vine actively seeks-out a pit of misery and basks in it until he finds a bigger one.

Re: Scott Mills to replace Steve Wright on radio 2
Ken Bruce is my radio-2 dj of choice, but I'm more a radio 4 listener these days. Just as well as most of my radios are only capable of AM !!
Jimmy Young and his choice of easy-listening music was the essence of Radio 2 and never really changed from the days of my nana having him on the rediffusion TV 'sound only' setting in the 70's right up to hsi retirement. He was always my favourite. But Steve Wright should become 'sir steve' I think, the livey programme must take some effort to be convincing especially after all these years, although it has its roots in american radio 'zoo' programmes. |
