HMV 1920 made in 1960.

5 Attachment(s)
Presenting my latest acquisition. The HMV 1920 was one of the first TV sets made in the UK to have an ultra sonic remote control system. This model was announced in the trade press in 1960.
Makes a change for me to have a set that just has a light layer dust instead of something that has been dragged out from a swamp.
The basic chassis is similar to the Ferguson 636T, TV receiver with FM radio.
The radio section is done properly having a separate FM tuner and a dual channel sound IF amplifier.
The CRT is the 23" twin panel type 23SP4 imported from the USA.
The single button remote control handset changes the TV channel along with a standby facility on a chosen channel number.
Apart from a broken EF80 valve the set is in excellent condition. No capacitors have been replaced during the lifetime of the set.
Before any attempt to apply any power to the set the motor board will have to come out first.

Love it! More like a thick carpet of dust.

Easy, haven't got one.

What a great looking set Fernseh, should be a cracker.

Hi John Joe,
I've been after this particular model for years, since seeing the circuit in the 1961/62 Radio and Television servicing book, it's that long ago.
Just hope the CRT is OK. My Pye V600A is equipped with the same type of tube and it's displays a bright picture.
This set must have caused a sensation when it came into the shops in 1960.

I assume its a motorised tuner. I was only aware of this set ;

Very nice! I think I saw that set for sale, and I hoped it would go to someone who would look after it rather than the cat bed/fish tank/cocktail cabinet brigade! It certainly looks in excellent condition, and even better that it has the remote control too. Fingers crossed the tubes a good’un.

Regards
Lloyd

A chain driven fireball tuner.

That was my chief concern, and also the owner of the set.
Well worth the 310 mile trip south to collect it.

What a fabulous set David- and one owner from new I seem to remember from the listing. The cost of that in 1960 must equate to a small fortune now.

Absolutely! As collection capers go, that's quite epic! Just goes to prove that if you really want something, you have to go for it. Distance puts some people off, but more often than not it makes for a grand day out and a bit of an adventure.

Really looking forward to seeing how you progress with this beauty.

I also saw the listing for this set, very glad it went to a good home.
I don't expect there is many of these around, a real top of the range set.
Having the original remote is a real bonus.

I look forward to following it's restoration, I guess it's been a few decades since it was last used, maybe they replaced it after that EF80 died?

Hi Mark,
That's we thought. The EF80 vision IF amplifier valve went down to air. You can imagine the response to that happening: "That's it the picture's disappeared, it's an old set now, let's go out and buy a new one"

The attachment shows the complex remote control board. The tuner motor is seized and likewise the FM tuner unit.

Re: HMV 1920 made in 1960.

The 600 series are very reliable David. The remote control system appears to differ from the Thorn/Philco 1100 Selectorflash that arrived a year later. That system used photocells to change channels and mute. No valves employed, very clever and the remote never gave any problems. I serviced quite a few of those, surprisingly it was quite popular in London.

I hope that bonded Sylvania 23SP4 is OK. They were a bit dodgy back in the day. John.

The attachment shows the remote control mechanism.
I suspect that this device was made by RCA.

Re: HMV 1920 made in 1960.

The tuner motor is working and the FM tuner tuner unit mechanism freed up and lubricated.
The mains dropper is a special component consisting of 25, 150, 35, 97 and 60 ohm sections. The 97 ohm section is open circuit, this is the section that supplies the valve heaters. The 150ohm section is in the HT supply to the PY32 anode, on TV it is shorted out and is used on FM to reduce the HT voltage.

Found a mains dropper resistor which can be used as a replacement for the faulty component. A separate 150ohm resistor can be inserted between the 25ohm section and the anode of the PY32.

Replacement mains dropper resistor fitted. The 130ohm section R243 is now located on an adjacent tag strip.
Apply mains, after lots of clunking noises from the motorised tuner some sort of results. It's all too evident this set still needs a lot of work done to it before we see pictures.
When new the set was adjusted to receive BBC1 on channel B1 and ITV on channel 9. There is a second band three position. The fourth peg on the station selector disc is for the "off" position. Wait fifteen seconds to activate the relay RL1.
It's not possible to switch the set on from the remote control handset. There's a button on the control panel to reset the power supply relay.

An excellent start and a rare set full of promise. Very much looking forward to the progress.
I too am very pleased that it has gone to a good home, having seen it for sale.

PS, it may be possible to re-wind the open dropper section. I have only just done so with an RBM A640 dropper that had the 250 ohm section O/C.

Re: HMV 1920 made in 1960.

Lots of black Hunts mouldseals to replace David. The 23SP4 looks really bright! I reckon it was the O/C dropper that spelt it's retirement. I have had a number of B9A valves go completely soft for no apparent reason, no cracks in the glass.
Maybe there is a capillary action between one of the pins and the glass button base. It's purely an age thing and seems to happen regardless of storage conditions. I bet it gives a cracking picture. John.
