2016 Solihull Meetup - Saturday 14th of May

Hi everyone.

As is customary round this time of year I thought I ought to organise a bit of a junk-swap and general get-together of all us TV-types on the forum. This year it will be on Saturday the 14th of May.

As per usual, there will be TV-fixing-a-plenty, eating, drinking, exaggerated tales of TV-fixing-of-old, plenty test-card music and general chitter-chatter to occupy everyone during the day.

There will be the usual fixing going on in the dining room / lounge and a workshop full of tools, spares and components upstairs for the using.

Thick crispy bacon sandwiches on lovely soft bread with red or brown sauce will be on hand up until mid-late morning; tea, coffee, squash, beer etc. will be flowing all day and then a trip to The Drum and Monkey on Four Ashes Road at lunch time followed by some kind of unhealthy evening meal for those staying late or staying overnight.

Also, although there won't be the huge pile of stuff like there was last year, if people could bring any junk that they might consider giving away / selling / swapping then that would it even better. Junk includes anything vaguely TV / radio related - bits and bobs, components, sets etc. Anything you like.

The meetup / junk swap will take place the day before the NVCF so for those people coming any distance there are a few beds / bunks / sofas / floors etc. available. There are also several local hostelries / hotels nearby. (The NVCF is about a 20 mile drive down the M40 from Solihull.)

Anyway - all are welcome and it's always a lot of fun.

Thanks everyone.

Kind regards.

From Mike.

PS. Mods - Is it okay for this thread to stay here in the TV section (at least for a little while) please? :)
PPS. Anyone heard uttering the phrases "first light" or "that capacitor" will be ejected. :)

Arrrrgh! I only get "proper" late shifts once every six months and I'm on them on this particular weekend! I'll try to change them if I can and then I'll be in for sure :)

Hi all.

That's excellent that you can make it. I think I'm probably triple-booked as far as beds etc. are concerned but I'm sure we'll squeeze everyone in somehow.

Thanks everyone.

Kind regards.

From Mike.
Ps. Pasties sound tip-top to me. :)

I have an as found TV62, completely untouched since the 60's if that's a fair candidate for the dining room table fun times?

Hi Mike,

I very much enjoyed my much too short visit last year and would like to be reminded of my days as a apprentice again this year.

Many thanks for all the work and organising.

Best wishes, Geoffrey.

Hi Pasty, Brian, Hamid, Stu, John, Bobby, Peter, Courtney and Geoffrey.

Apologies for the long pause in replying. Nothing less than my terrible rudeness I'm afraid.

I'm glad you can all make it and Courtney, please do bring along the TV62 - There will be at least couple of workshops available and all the bits and pieces you may need.

I'll post up more details a bit nearer the time but please do save up any TV related junk you may have for swapping, selling or giving away.

Thanks everyone and apologies again for the delay.

Kind regards.

From Mike.

Hi all again.

If anyone needs to know my address and phone number then just PM me and I'll send over the details. The pile of stuff isn't quite the huge mound it was last year but there are a number of televisions for giving away this year among all sorts of other junk. If you have any stuff (TV related or otherwise) to bring along for giving away / swapping / selling or whatever else then please do bring it along.

Could I possibly ask people to bring some kind of name badges with their name and forum-name please. And if you would like to bring along any food / drink to share with your forum-pals during the day then that would be excellent too. There will of course be the usual bacon sandwiches in the morning, a pub visit at lunch time and some kind of foreign-type food in the evening for those who wish to partake and beer for those who are stopping in a hotel or staying over.

I'm very much looking forward to it so I hope to see you all there.

Thanks everyone.

Kind regards.

From Mike.
PS. If you have a folding garden deck-chair or similar you could bring then it may be useful in case there are far more people than seats. :)

Has anyone that is going to Mike's and to the NVCF got room to take a 19" 8500? Neil has said he can take it to Mike's but he isn't going to the NVCF the following day.
I would be very grateful and happily make a payment towards fuel.
Rich.

Re: 2016 Solihull Meetup - Saturday 14th of May

Hi Rich, Mike, Lee and Trevor.

Sorry for the delay Trevor - That's just my usual tardiness. :) I've replied now so you should have all the details. I think a few people are staying in a hotel in Hockley Heath called "The Oak".

Mike - Your camp-bed slot is safe in the workshop - if you don't mind the mess of wires and junk everywhere. :)

Lee - The long-range forecast says rain next weekend - but I'm quite sure these things aren't entirely set in stone so hopefully we shall have blazing sunshine both days.

I've ordered a slab of 150 rashers of thick bacon from the butcher yesterday to be collected next Friday. Just 20 loaves of bread and umpteen jars of coffee (and tea) to go. :)

Thanks all.

Kind regards.

From Mike.

Hi Courtney and Mike.

Mike - That sounds tip-top. I shall look forward to sampling your cake. It seemed to be a big hit at the last meetup.

Courtney - Khryssy's tea and coffee making skills and general glamorous demeanour were much in demand last time - although nobody burns bacon like me so she may need to fight me for use of the grill!

Hi Mikey,
Is there still a place for me to stay?

Were you able to get the Invicta entertainment centre over to Solihull?

Cheers
Andy

Re: 2016 Solihull Meetup - Saturday 14th of May

Hi Andy.

Yes, still a place for you to stay (as long as you don't mind a slightly wobbly bunk bed). :)

Regarding the Invicta: Alas the Renault (the only car I have big enough to fit the huge tele-gram monster) is down in Devon having a new cam belt. And besides, the house is gridlocked with TVs at the moment - Hopefully a few will be going out the door this weekend. :)

When we met at Jeremy's I asked if I could call in, I hope it is still OK to pop in in the afternoon for a few hours, I don't need accommodation as my daughter lives nearby and I still have your details from last year.

Hi Mikey,
No worries about the Invicta, it is a beast of a thing.

I'll be bringing a few bits I don't need. I found a bag of triplers whilst having a clearout - I'm really not sure about colour TV, I don't think it will catch on!

Looking forward to meeting everyone over the weekend.

Cheers
Andy

Hi all.

Could I ask that people wear some kind of name badges with their real and forum names please? It can be awkward if somebody you've spoken to a lot on the forum is stood next to you and you have no idea who they are. :) And besides, I have enough trouble remembering my own name.

Thanks all.

Kind regards.

Hi Mike,

Time permitting, is it too late to ask if I can come along?
It's 50/50 at the moment whether I can, but would like to if it's possible.
Perhaps I could bring along my [untouched -besides hoovering out- and in need of attention] Philips N1520 VCR if anyone has time to take a peek at it too.. would that be OK? My interests lie mainly in vintage video recorders and 70's - 80's TV programmes, but old tellies fascinate me too :)

Cheers

Hi Rob.

By all means - You're most welcome. As for N1520s, they're not something to be ventured into lightly. They have all the worst bits of the N1500s with even more complicated circuitry. I have one in Devon but I'm too scared to go near it! :)

... yikes - I don't have the service manual either - which would make it even more of a swine to fix!
I think I'll ask if anyone has the service manual... (it's nowhere online that I can find) has to be worth a try!

I won't know until last minute if I can come, it all depends on time - and I do fancy the NVCF too...
