Philco Model 60 Smoothing Cap

Hi All

After some success repairing my Hacker GP42 I am back working on my Philco model 60. For a while I have been bothered by the hum that the player emits it's not in any way bad and seems to get better when it's been on for a while but I would like to fix it properly. The schematic shows the smoothing cap (C10) as a 10uf/40uf can which after some extensive googling I can't seem to find available.

What's the generally accepted way to replace these old capacitors I am guessing it's a matter of using two individual electrolytics however I would appreciate someone educating me on how to install them, or if there is a source of "proper" replacements?

Many thanks for any advice offered.

It's unlikely to be that kind of value. Search for two seperate 40uF caps rated at 350V. You will be unlikely to find both in the same can now. Follow the polarity of the originals as regards + and -. Both the - ends go to the chassis. This is a "live" chassis record player so do make sure your mains lead neutral is connected to chassis. If you are unsure about any of this DO NOT PROCEED.

The circuit diagram for the model 60 shows the smoothing capacitors as being 40uF plus 30uF, both designated as C6.

It's the model 56 which uses 40uF plus 40uF plus 10uF, all designated C10.

Thanks Graham that’s really helpful. I am simply referring to the service data I downloaded so maybe I have the wrong one!

I think you have the right service sheet, but you're looking at the wrong diagram.
