New Sections of Emley Moor Mast being lifted into place
Hi folks,
Hope this is in the right place and that I'm not breaking any rules of the forum. Here's a link to some video footage of new sections of the Mast at Emley Moor being lifted into place. Might be of interest to some of the community here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4mN45E9lRM Video was shot and posted by Lee Collins. |

How annoying. I have clear LOS and missed it. >((

Impressive - lots of guy wires to avoid too. Is the lattice coming down soon then? It's a bit far from us to see any action, clear view but just a matchstick on the horizon...

Very impressive helicopter piloting.

Looks quite a blustery day too.

Weren't they looking for bids for the lattice mast last year?
Russian twin-rotor helicopter... no little windmill on the tail, very stable. It did a good job and was well-piloted. David |

There's a second Youtube video, showing about 5 minutes of action in real time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN2cMdi3qv8, where the skill of the pilot is even more apparent (helicopter being Swiss-owned).
Hat's off to all involved . When you drive north up the M1, there's that magical point a little north of Sheffield when Emley appears on the horizon, and you then know that you are definitely back in God's own country . B |

Engineering at it's best.

That was darn impressive, even more so to me, or anyone with a bit of "stick time" in helicopters, it looks so easy from the ground! I wonder what the accuracy needed to plonk those bits down was?

That's a cute piece of filming.

The positioning was good to about ±2"; how does the pilot do that? You wouldn't see much through the floor, cameras on the underside would only give a rough view from, what, 100 ft above. Most of the sections were hollow so I should think there was a camera at the hook on which the straps were hooked

There are fancy autopilots for helicopters doing construction and rescue work that will hold the aircraft fairly still in 4 dimensions, with controls to allow vernier movements. Still takes a skilled pilot to be able to get them into position in the first place and to handle things if they disengage.

Note now the sudden appearance of tag lines at around the 3:59 mark - the rather disconcerting bit where the guy ducked under the load to attach them has been cut! Cheers |
