My own experiments with digital photography suggested that my eyes (*) could distinguish up to 4 pixels per millimetre when I was in my late 20s. So that's 16 bits per mm². On a sheet of A4 paper (210 x 297 mm.) with a 10 mm. margin all around (190 x 277; 52 630 mm²) there would be room for 842 080 pixels. That's 105 260 bytes, with no error-correction. If, however, we used red, yellow and blue inks, giving 8 distinct states, we could actually treble the information density.
