Taylor 45C HELP please!
Hello everyone,
I recently bought an old Taylor Model 45C. I want to test valves like these: 6l6gc el34 6550 7195 el84 7189 12ax7 ef86 gz34 5U4GB etc I really have no idea what to do. I found the valve chart online but I cant find any of the valves I want to test. Even if I see a tube I recognize, I still dont know how to set the dials, such as A, B, C. Could someone please give me a hand? Perhaps one example of the correct settings which I can cross reference to a tube setting in the valve chart, which would do much to help me understand this machine. It seems most of these valves arent even in the valve charts. I read there was some software or application developed a decade ago that can assist? Thanks a million |
Re: Taylor 45C HELP please!
You will need the instruction manual and also the Valve chart which is what I use on my 45 B version.
here is the chart for the C version https://archive.org/details/taylor_v...5a_45b_46a_47a I have found the 45C instruction manual, I shall try to upload the pdf here. If that doesn't work send me a PM. Search this site and you will find more. |

I have no idea what data you have downloaded, every valve on your list is in the data book. The 7189 is same as an EL84 !
For example see below the 6L6, you set the heater to 6.3 volt, anode / screen to 100 100, grid to 6 Then selector A to 4, B to 2, and C to 0 your A and B controls fully anticlockwise to start I can email you searchable data if you PM me. |
Re: Taylor 45C HELP please!
Thanks, so 420 means 4+2+0...
So for the 6l6 I select the gm.3 mA/V option and hope to read a mutual conductance of 3.8 which means good? And this happens if I press the "meter" and/ or "gas test" button? |

Re: Taylor 45C HELP please!
What no one has, so far, mentioned, is that if you do not know for certain, that the tester is working properly, it is sensible to check its operation before trying to test any valve; for example, you don't want it applying the incorrect heater voltage. The wafer switches in these units are now causing problems.

I've picked up a 47A in the summer, managed to get the smaller paper back valve list for it but struggled to find the earlier hardback in physical or PDF. I believe the hardback contains the B9 valves for example, for the base which isn't present on the later models? Got 'lucky' in Newport at the ARC rally with a metal panel with many bases, haven't drawn the schematic for it yet but it terminates to a B9 base, I imagine to go onto the Taylor or other elder equivalent with various repeat bases with 'quick selection' possible for certain configs - it certainly gives me around 5 B9A choices.. Should have signed up here sooner - long time lurker first time poster! Kr, Matt |
