Ekco TMB272 - TX275

4 Attachment(s)
I recently repaired my TMB272.
This proved not too difficult, but the set still has to be aligned better - several coils are very difficult to reach though! The cabinet must get some attention as well (in time…).

A different set of this family is the TX275, of which I have 2 versions: one is 625 only, the other is 625E + 625B + 819B.
The 625 TX275 looks quite a bit like the TMB272; the 3-standard one has an additional unit built in:

The TX275 uses EF80s where the TMB272 has 6F1s.

Both TX275s have a desintegrated LOPT housing:

Does anyone know if service data (and/or alignment data) for the TX275 exist?
I couldn’t find anything online.
(I have the original Ekco service data for the TMB272, but the TX275 is different in many aspects.)

Thanks for your advise / help!

Re: Ekco TMB272 - TX275

The TMB272 is quite a common set in the UK, the first portable TV capable of car battery operation.
Your set looks to have an excellent picture, the CRT's always seem to survive well, my set has a very good CRT, although it is patiently awaiting restoration.

The TX275 was obviously an export model, interesting that there is a multi standard version, I know that they were used as monitors by the BBC, but probably a modified 405 line only model.

Re: Ekco TMB272 - TX275

That must be the very first Ekco that needs realignment. Certain receivers such as the Sobell TPS173 series, the Philco 1000/1019 and Thorn 850's used to get twiddled by stupid repair guys but never an Ekco! Are you sure Mark it is off alignment? We used to have a very big export market back then.Regards, John.

Thanks Mark and John.

Unfortunately yes John - I suspect a previous owner did some "alignment" on the TMB272...
I bought the TMB272 and TX275s almost 30 years ago, but only now came to working on the sets.
The alignment is now reasonable, but could be better.

The TX275 is an export model. I have a promotional sheet in Dutch, and found a mention in a French promotional booklet of British electrical products for the home, and a Swedish ad.

It would be nice to find some documentation of the TX275 set(s).

I have some info on the TX276 if that's any good

Thanks Stephen!

I have some circuit detail of the TX276 too, but it could very well be that what you have is better readable!
I'll send you a PM.

Best regards,
Jac

Re: Ekco TMB272 - TX275

Hello Jac,
Does the system B only model TX275 have the 5.5Mhz FM sound stages on the signals chassis?
I assume the sub-chassis is for the system F AM sound IF amplifier. Narrow bandwidth 819 lines Belgium system.
Direct line sync as in the 405 line model.

Hello David,

Yes, the 625-only model has everything on the signals chassis. Does not necessarily have to differ so much from the TMB272, which has 3 FM radio channels.

The 625E + 625B + 819B version has the small additional chassis with 3 coil/transformers (and 2 valves) on it.

I haven't looked into it in detail yet. I thought to collect any available data first to make things easier. I suppose a full service manual was issued at the time.
It should be possible to restore both sets without any info, but it just makes life easier to have it :)

I'm glad both TX275s have the EF80s i.s.o. the 6F1s as in the TMB272. I have no spare 6F1s, but exchanging two with each other in the TMB272 resulted in good enough valves for both positions.

In contrast with the TX275s, the LOPT housing of the TMB272 is still in excellent condition:

The deteriorated plastic in the TX275s might have something to do with moisture. Some metal parts are heavily rusted or corroded, so the set will have to be dismantled anyway to gain access to all that.

Re: Ekco TMB272 - TX275

Those LOPTX housing were very prone to deteriorating, very common fault in the 1960’s. Ekco used the same style in many of its models.
