HMV Gramophone identity?
Hello all
Please help me identify this gramophone and give some advice whether it has the original parts or it has been modified. Thank you for your help |

Re: Hmv gramophone identify
One immediately thinks "fake" when seeing a horn gramophone but this looks more genuine than many. The brake mechanism looks very like that from a 100 portable but others may be able to say whether it was used on early machines. The labels look a little odd though
Here are links to similar genuine machines for comparison purposes https://gramophoneguru.com/makes-and-motors/ https://www.bonhams.com/auction/1979...ogany-version/

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
The RD number corresponds to 1911, which seems about right. I haven't seen many fakes at close quarters, but I've not heard of them even trying to present that kind of detail.

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
This Model 20 looks very similar: handle position, brake, speed control, cabinet, horn shape etc..
https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-4163915 Also a lot of detailed photographs here, said to be of a Model 2, including the test and RD labels: https://forum.antiquephono.org/topic/146-hmv-model-ii/ Last edited by Paul_RK; 27th Mar 2024 at 11:36 pm. |

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
That's definitely not an HMV motor, but apart from that it all looks to be original.

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
Thank you all for the answers. I have read also the links and they are pretty interesting.
I am attaching more pictures of the motor and also the soundbox. The sound box seems to me that is from a Decca gramophone, I don't know what to say about the motor. Please advise. |

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
Are we seeing two different motors in the latest pictures? The one shown in 3, 4 and 5 appears correct for the machine.

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
And do you think that 1000 euro is a fair price for this gramophone? I don’t want to flip it, but to pass it by to my children one day

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
Sorry, but they're not. In the first picture the governors are in a completely different place to that in the last ones, and the speed controls are very different.

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
You might be right about the pictures. There is some inconsistency, they don’t match … probably the seller is not so fair as I thought. I will pass and search for a better item.
Thank you all for your precious insights and help Regards |

Re: HMV Gramophone identity?
€1000 sounds like a lot for the condition.
I know little about Gramophone prices though. Perhaps contact John Sleep https://www.windupgram.co.uk/ I have bought needles here and they sell complete items as well as accessories and consumables. Cheers Mike T
