Default What to mount stanchions on?

Hi folks,

What do you use to mount stanchions on? I have some plastic stanchions that are threaed with a hex nut at each end.

But I only want to use them to mount a small PCB that will be encased. So that leaves me with one threaded end that could be passed through the box but then leaving the ugly plastic nut visible, which is silly as well as ugly.

So what do people mount the distal end of stanchions on? Thank you

For outside case work I use male/female posts, with the screw on the outside.

How thick is the case? Could you drill and tap a hole to accommodate the threaded post and then trim to size flush with the surface, applying some Araldite on the thread to prevent it unscrewing?

Good plan but I don't have a tapping set and limited (none actually) workshop space. I'd like to make a neat job though. I guess I could just araldite the standhipns to the inside of the case once the other end is mounted to the circuit...

Thanks though , and to MerlinM!

I've just done a job in which I needed to support a small PCB using brass threaded spacers, but didn't have chance to drill holes in the panel they had to be fixed to. I bonded them to the panel with blobs of quick-setting epoxy, and it worked surprisingly well. The other ends of the spacers have male threads and the PCB is held on with nuts in the usual way.

The attached photo isn't great but shows the principle.

Bill and Richard -- interesting product! I like it and might give it a try. Thanks!

Chris - neat example of how to do this . Thanks!

Cheers , Al

I'd use car body filler as it doesn't slump as much as epoxy while setting.

Outside my area of expertise, what brands do you recommend? Thank you. Is it safe to use inside, VOC's?

I got some for a project I was on, but I found them in the PC section. I can't tell if these are same as on line catalogue can't find qt86, and lists qt26.
If all else fails, PC motherboard spacers are tapped , although the thread in the stub end is a weird thread as it's designed to screw into a PC base.
More possibly some more into PC building can suggest where to get these .

Al.The only type that I have are these.

What size do you want an how many you looking for, if these are not two long I can spare some for the postage. But that may not be worth it as the Oldcodger said a PC board mountings.

While there's probably some theoretical risk, using small quantities indoors with good ventilation shouln't be a problem. However, the odour is strong, and tends to linger for some days, so you might prefer to find somewhere else to work with it.

Car-body-filler doesn't contain the usual "solvent" type VOCs, the nasty smell is a Styrene monomer, which reacts with the hardener [polymerises] to form Poly-Styrene. The hardener is, if anything, the more-hazardous - it's an organic-peroxide which works *very* well as an oxidiser/fire-accelerant! (a friend used to work at a facility that made radomes etc from the stuff...)

For this sort of thing I use a metal-loaded-epoxy called "JB Weld". It sticks to pretty much anything provided the 'anything' is clean and grease-free. Once hardened [24 hours] it can be drilled. tapped, machined in the same way as light alloy.

Hi, I just need 2 sets of 4 really! That would be great! I think around 1.5 cm should be ok for one lot (part SMD technique )and shorter for the other. Would that be ok? Thanks!!!
