It may be better to start a new thread, maybe in components or vintage computers, as wanted threads are subject to deletion. Unless one of the moderators could take the time to move this thread to a different section.

I now stand better informed, but agree with Mark1960 that this probably should now move back to a regular thread in e.g. circuits and components or vintage computing.

Updated photos attached. The 40 pin turned-pin socket is much better now with a strengthening bar and increased support so it doesn't warp.

I've also attached a photo of a first prototype of a DIL socket. Needs a bit of tweaking but it's getting there.

AliExpress sell the turned-pin pins in quantities of 1,000. I'm looking to see if I can buy the DIL pins on their own too.

One can get inline strips of machine pin sockets. I have used them in place of regular IC sockets by just cutting them to length. However I have only seen them in black.
(It was an easy way to carry basically "universal Sockets" in my spares service kit, as they would fit any size IC like 6502's and Z80's, down to the 4 pin opto couplers.)

The only thing to bear in mind about turned-pin sockets is that they are very much harder to desolder from a double sided PCB without causing damage to the top side pads, if the need ever arises. I understand why you'd try to replicate those first as the pins are simple, symmetrical round shapes.

Bit of an update attached. Next is to solder them to see if the resin used in the 3D print will stand the heat.

This is very much a "because I can" project rather than a sensible one, but I can't find any other way of getting white sockets which so often need replacing in the PETs so I thought I'd give it a bash.

I think they look really good. I like the translucent red.

Do you know if the white will discolour with age?

That's a good question. I believe that any white resin will discolour (go yellow-ish generally) with age, even Water Washable which is what this is.

However, I believe that's due to expose to UV light and if the sockets are in the PET then I think that shouldn't happen.

Soldered in and tested OK with no deformation as a result of using the soldering iron.

I'll put the DIL sockets on Thingiverse in case anyone else ever wants to print different colour sockets.

I’m not sure if there are different designs of folded pin in use by different suppliers. It might be helpful to others if you add a close up picture of the pins that you took from the original black sockets.

The pins are from a generic set of sockets I bought from Amazon. I have a few boxes from there and they're all the same pins.
