Default Marconiphone 1960

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm after a little help please.

I've found a 1960 Marconiphone record player in my Dad's loft that he has let me take away to play my old rock and roll singles on.

The issue is that it's been sat in the loft for 41 years and it seems to be broken. The drive had stopped working and everything was a little corroded. I've cleaned everything up and everything is now working on the automated side but no sound from the speaker.

I can hear the correct music coming from the needle and I can see the valves glowing but still nothing from the speaker except buzzing.

Might there be something simple that I'm missing or a common issue that old electronics have?

Thanks, Bod.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Experience has taught us that when trying to help new members with record players we need to be in possession of all the facts.

I assume that 1960 is the year of manufacture rather than a model number?

Do you know the model number?

Can you tell us how many valves are fitted and what type they are?

Posting some pictures may help.

After all that time in a loft, it's pretty certain that the cartridge will have failed. This is the part that holds the stylus (needle). Unfortunately, cartridges are now both rare and expensive, but if you can post a photo of the cartridge, or find a name and number on it, we can advise on possible replacements.

There was actually a record player called a "1960", but that was made by EAR in (confusingly?) 1956! Now waiting to hear back from the OP.

If you can touch the connectors at the back of the cartridge with the amp on at about half volume, you should get a pronounced hum from touching the pole(s) - (mono or stereo cartridge?) if the amp is working.

I've attached some pictures here. It was bought in 1960, I can't see a model number anywhere

A pretty standard two valve amplifier. Not much can go wrong with these.

Try the test suggested in post #5.

A nice player with a large 9" x 5" speaker. But this needs a high-output cartridge, and if yours has failed, then you have a problem.......But first of all let us know if the amp hums when the pins on the cartridge are touched as advised above. This uses UL84/UY85 valves and the chassis will be live unless it's connected to Neutral. Be careful!

Thanks for your excellent photos, these really help. As best as I can see, the existing cartridge is a BSR TC8H, it should have an orange coloured body. If the amp works using the test as above, then the cartridge will have failed - as they do over time.

One can be imported from Australia for £55.00, but even so these cartridges are for Mono records only, they will permanently damage a Stereo pressing. It is also possible to buy re-built TC8Hs for £49.95 in the UK, but again it will only be suitable for Mono LPs. Most LPs from 1965-67 onwards are likely to be Stereo.

Let us know how you get on.
