Default UHER Report Monitor 4000 - new arrival

Hi all.
My NOS never used UHER Report Monitor 4000 deck has arrived !
Bought it from SDS in Germany, they took over the remaining stock when the UHER factory closed. They have lots of spare parts & accessories available too.

The deck works very well, not very often that you can buy a brand new reel to reel deck these days. My unit was made in 1996. The belts have already been replaced. It is so much quieter running than my older UHER Report decks !
I intend to do a lot of field recordings with it, trying out my various different microphones with it.

Anyway, some pics of it :-

Hi. Sorry, I don't really need any help with it, just wanted to show it off I guess.
I do know the BBC used these tape decks for awhile, I am mainly interested in the history of their use more than anything.
Cheers, Chris

I haven't seen a new UHER 4000 since I was at BBC local radio in the late '70s!
Nice piece of kit. Enjoy!

Yes enjoy it! There is nothing like having a brand new and unused item in your hands, especially when it is actually quite old. I got a NOS Philips R2R last year and there is a lot of pleasure in opening the box etc. Mind you haven't checked the rubber yet.
Just savour the pleasure!

Thanks !
I really do like the UHER Report decks. They are smaller, lighter & need less batteries to run than the Nagra decks. And are cheaper of course.
I also have the matching UHER Mix 700 portable mixer to use with it.
Anyone else on this forum use reel to reel decks for field recordings ?
Cheers, Chris

Hi Graham.
Yes, the price for the Report Monitor 4000 is not cheap, but I think definitely worth it. The guys at SDS are great, good communication & the unit was packed well. They replace the belts & fully test the deck beforehand.

I also got the mains power adapter & a UHER metal reel with mine.

Cheers, Chris

I agree, € 330,- or £300 I would say is not unreasonable for a high quality portable tape recorder, albeit mono only. Heck, that's what some people might pay for a vintage unit!

Been having lots of fun using it so far.
But I do need to invest in a decent new condensor mic, all my mics are secondhand.
Some of them just don't have the high level output like they should.
I need a good mic for outdoor ambient recording. And I definitely need some decent windshields, the stupid foam ones I have are pretty hopeless !

Hi
The BBC did indeed use these machines. To make them foolproof, they sawed off (literally in some cases) the speed selector so that it stayed in the 7.5ips position. Of course this meant that the machine didn't switch off so I assume another switch was used for this. Odd!

I don't remember how the speed control was fixed at 7½ips, nor do I remember how the machine was switched on and off. It was probably a BBC modification, they were into that sort of thing back then!

Doesn't turning off the machine via the speed switch disengage the motor physically from the flywheel, i.e. leaving the machine in the 7 1/2 position would eventually cause a flat in some rubber surface? If that is in fact the case, wouldn't it be better to mechanically stop the speed selector moving sideways, so that the speed can't be changed, yet the machine could still be turned on and off in it's intended way?

Of course I don't know what modification the BBC actually did, so the above is complete speculation.

I understand that the BBC just fixed the speed selector in the 7.5 IPS position.
But this was not for the later Report Monitor decks, like the one I have.
