Default Moulinex Carving Knife ..Which Capacitor?

Hello
I have just got a Moulinex Electric carving knife Model CE1A, 230v 120w
It worked on quick test but I thought I had better go inside and have a look, to find that the sleeving (rubber) on the leads from the capacitor had badly perished, the capacitor is across the mains supply, I am assuming that the knife is 1960’s
Should the capacitor be replaced as well as the sleeving, if so any suggestions as to type, values etc. as the current one has not got any markings at all!
I guess it should be an x rated one?
Many thanks
Philip

If it is a simple 2 wire cap then you should be able to replace it with an X2. The value won't be critical - I would use 0.1 or 0.047uF. The motor will run without the cap but may generate some hash.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the rotted insulation. I also have one of these knives which sees occasional use. I've never cracked it open as it works well, but I will now do so. Mine may be 70s rather than 60s so the insulation may be PVC, but it needs checking.

And a very good job they do too- mine's back on breadknife duty these days but did a sterling job on the polystyrene foam batts in the shed walls ten years ago.

I had a devil of a job finding some replacement blades a year ago- eventually got some NOS ones from Greece of all places.

I mostly use mine to cut up large hard vegetables such as swedes. These are very hard work with a conventional chef's knife no matter how sharp it is.
