Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
I have been given a point of sale item for an energy drink. It's a can of the drink mounted in a bent metal stand. The can has a thick plastic around it, with a connection leading to an inverter, and back from there to a standard plug.
Inevitably, it's not working, although the inverter makes a good hum when it's switched on. Does anyone know please what technology this is likely to be? Is it some sort of wrap-around LCD perhaps? Any hints would be welcomed. Many thanks. Regards, Richard Last edited by YoungManGW; 9th Jan 2017 at 10:49 am. Reason: Typo |

Maybe an electroluminescent panel?

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Thank-you both. Will do some digging as to how to repair it. I imagine it's most likely a short, as the gap between the two wires must be awfully narrow, as the wrap is very thin.

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Have managed to locate and repair the connections problem, and now have the electroluminescent panel working. However, the AC/DC adapter that I'd need to run it, with the inverter, from a normal socket, is cooked.
So, does anyone have please an AC/DC adapter: - input AC100-240v 50/60 Hz - output DC12v 200 mA - round pin outlet with external diameter of 6mm? Very many thanks. Regards, Richard |

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
12V DC @ >0.2A should be very easy to source. But connectors vary tremendously.
Could you hack the connector off the old adaptor? Or fit a new connector to the inverter? Or make a hard wired connection between the two? Last edited by Nickthedentist; 9th Jan 2017 at 3:51 pm. |

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
A suitable adaptor should be widely available, remembering that 12 volts DC is one of the most popular voltages, and that the 200ma rating of the existing unit should be regarded as a minimum, larger is fine.
Many such DC adaptors come with a selection of output connection plugs, hopefully including the one that you need. Presuming UK use, then you do not need the wide input voltage range of the original, 230/240 volts will be fine. |

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Thanks both - I've put a wanted post in the relevant section of the forum, as these things tend to lie around in corners once the items they once powered have long gone west. Will otherwise pick up something suitable online.

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Hi Richard, I think you should look deeper at the outlet connector.
A photo or three here might help. As Nick advises, 'connectors vary tremendously'. It is not just the outside diameter involved. There a number of choices for the other contact. e.g Pin size (if present) Regards - Mke |

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Those are very cheap and cheerful
Easiest to cut off the lead from the defective adaptor, and the plug from the replacement, and wire the two together with solder and heatshrink sleeving, ensuring correct polarity. You will be able to find a suitable PSU at most car boots or charity shops for much less than the postage would be if I were to send you one from my scrap box. N. |

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
A PSU from a wireless router might work, the newer Technicolor boxes use 12V 1A power supplies which would be fine. Also whilst it is not much of a problem if using a switching (lightweight) power supply if you have a power supply that has a high current rating (i.e. 2A+) it might 'sing' a bit due to the low loading which may be annoying,.

Re: Illuminated Energy Drink Point of Sale Display
Thanks for all the help. I think I've found a suitable adapter for a couple of quid. Will update again when it's arrived and, hopefully, I have the thing working.

The adapter finally arrived - definitely the slow boat from China!
The point of display item is now working. Many thanks for all the information and advice. Regards, Richard |
