In the early '70s, when I was a student, the answer to the question "What's the most efficient way to turn beer into Watneys?" was "Use a student!".

ISTR it coincided with the emergence of CAMRA into the light of day.

Lowenbrau beer (pronounced Lurvenbroi in German) originates from Munich in Bavaria. The name means Lion's brew. One advertizing campaign was the slogan "Lowenbrau, a beer like Bavaria". Every morning standing on a freezing cold platform waiting for a train I looked at a large poster with that slogan and thought "yeah, cold and wet".

Of course another technique is to produce an advert which is so dreadful as to cause everyone to continuously criticise it - and therefore remind people of the product it promotes. For that reason, I won't mention any examples!

Thus proving the old adage: 'there's no such thing as bad publicity'.

Perhaps I should post the other side of the poster as a fitting end to the (interesting) off topic digressions in this thread.

If it's still open by the time I get home.......

Well, there's a pub in Worcester called the The Old Rectifying House.

(It's next to the river and prone to flooding - when the water gushes in it's likely a full wave...)

Is it me, or does that "Music Box" record player look a bit ahead of its time?

I bet it wasn't quite as dire-sounding as its modern equivalent, though .....

There's nothing so exciting on the back of my poster of Olivia Newton John of the same year.

Only a week or two back I was rummaging through a folder of such stuff that had been in my parents' loft - there are a lot of vintage cuttings and promotional material from the early days of BBC and ILR local radio and pirate radio days - but perhaps that is for another thread.

We had a Philips AG4000 in the 1960s. I still have the records, including LPs, that were bought to play on it and they have fared very well (far better than the ones that were regularly played on a Fidelity box with BSR auto-changer that arrived a decade later).

I eventually wired it to a wooden box speaker which improved the sound somewhat. I also wired in a PSU as it was intended to run off six U2 batteries. Many happy hours...

Has everything in the original ad been identified yet?
