Hi Miguel, yes the 7490 was the chip of choice for clock builders here many years back.
As long as you de-couple well (0.1uF on each chip, direct on the Gnd and Vcc pins) they work very well.

I have soldered all the components for the minutes and seconds counters. Here a picture.

I love the single sided (sort of) design, surface mount but bigger, the links are good too. You can debug the whole thing from one side if needed. I do something similar with 'real' SMT (surface mount technology) components and usually have a double sided board the back side of which is ground only (saves exposing and etching the back!)

Yes, me too (I have never opened holes on PCBs); but in fact this is not the case as that PCB is double-sided. On the other side it is the hours counter, althought I have not mounted the components yet, but you can see the shadows of the lanes on that picture.

Double single sided, I must remember that to save on materials and space.

You will save a lot, I can assure it.

Here the other side of that PCB with the hours counter.

This is the time base that I will use for the clock. It is the PCB of a quartz "analog" clock. TO-92 transistor for size comparison.

Can you pick up WWVB (the 60kHz American time service) in Cuba? From their coverage maps it looks likely. If you want a receiver I have a few left over from a project, yours for the asking, drop me a PM.

Not sure about that. I will ask some expert here in Cuba if that is possible.

This is quite common centrepiece for home-made clocks. They can be had for nothing, and will give good accuracy even long after the plastic wheels of the original movement have worn out.

Here's some useful info: http://sound.whsites.net/clocks/timebase.html

Hi Miguel,

A clock based on discrete logic IC's is always a wonderful project. (much more fun than a PIC based one, if I can say that without treading on anyone's toes) Especially 74 series IC's. I have made a number myself over the years. It is pretty well the right of passage for every electronics enthusiast to build a clock at some point. Perhaps it is the enigmatic nature of time, making it more attractive too.

The last one I built, I wanted it to be battery powered so I went for vintage 4000 series cmos. To "go the whole way" I made it 12hr (with AM/pm indicators) or 24Hr, and count up or down so I could use it as a countdown time to trigger an event. The displays are made by Innocor (hard to get) but they are the cmos equivalent of the famous vintage Texas TIL311. I also added a 1/10 sec column which looks great, especially on counting down. One trick used in it, that you won't see often, is the use of XOR gates to mix in the time set control buttons to each counter IC. Also the time-base is an Epson IC that has an internal crystal. It runs on 4 re-chargeable AA cells, and built into an OKW case. If you want to see this cmos clock, it is here and the circuits are there to see how I did the 12-24hr logic etc:

You should be able to use an analogue quartz clock, (of the usual type where the seconds hand advances in 1 second increments, as opposed to the less common sweep seconds hand type), without modifying it at all. The clock consumes a few microamps, except when the seconds hand is pulsed, where the current is a pulse of a few milliamps. Put a small resistor in series with the battery (a small piece of double sided pcb between the battery and one of the contacts will break into the circuit), and amplify the 1 second pulses. At any time the clock can be put back as it was.

Very interesting idea. I will not use it this time as I have several PCBs of quartz clocks to use, but definitively something to have into account. Thanks.

This is the cabinet for the digital clock. It still need painting but my wife and I are in the process to decide if paint it in white or dark brown. It has that triangular shape as it will be placed in a corner of the kitchen.

Finally I painted the clock cabinet in dirt magnet.....I mean, white. I placed it in a corner in our kitchen, above the fridge. I wanted to take a panoramic picture but my wife said that the kitchen was not "presentable". Is any kitchen presentable?

Looks very good. Always nice to see a completed and working project.

And indeed, no kitchen is presentable, especially not mine
