TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
Reading from mark pirate's TV32 restoration reminded me of two absolute sheds that really must have been in a barn, where I collected them from, why I don't know, since the 70's The bottom set is a GEC no idea on the other but I really don't think they will be seeing test card C!
If anyone knows what they are? Will confine them to the back of the garage I think for now anyway. |

Re: deepest, darkest Devon find !
It's a Sobell, model T23 I think. The one below is a GEC, that set will be an easy fix.

Re: deepest, darkest Devon find !
Sadly it's not a Royal Star (I was hoping it was before I got there as I bought a red one at RWB recently) its's quite a bit bigger.
They are so rough although sometimes a wipe with a sponge can change things, will test the picture valve on my Capener tester. |

Re: deepest, darkest Devon find !
I agree with David, definitely a Sobell on top of the GEC. The Sobell looks beyond help, but will still yield a few good parts
At least the GEC looks saveable. I must admit I too would have saved them, even just to strip them for parts! I would be interested to see what state the GEC is in once you have the back off. Mark |

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
They look positively clean compared to the initial state of my GEG BT7094 !!
Of course they'll work with a wipe over and a warm up via a variac Go on, you know you want to. Waiting to see the Testcard C piccys. Cheers, Alan. |

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
If the GEC has a 17" AW43-80 CRT, what size does the Sobell have? Looks like it is a 23", quite a monster CRT in its time.

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
I've managed to get a picture out of worse!
Go on, plug em in! Keep them warm and dry, give them a scrub and they'll be as good as new... Almost.. Regards, Lloyd |

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
doh ! the gec's tube pins have rotted away, the monster prob is a 23 inch and the small badge at the bottom of the tube says PILOT - can't see much else, it might "go again"
probably will strip the GEC due to the tube so if anyone needs parts |

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
The chassis in the top one looks remarkably similar to the chassis in the Ultra VP17-72. I recognise that PCB that swings out (IF stages, I think), the fireball tuner under it, the line output stage in the screen on the other side, the dropper resistor, etc.

That set on the top - the Sobell? - what an impressive set! Is it too far gone to be revived?

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
hi Mark the base is already detached - there may just be a point to solder onto maybe with brave and careful use of a dremmel to buzz around the glass...
the top one has the plastic (I am assuming) missing where the controls went so there is just an oval hole, of the 2 sets if its a rarity then I guess it will go again. I have some much cleaner ones to fiddle with that potentially should be fairly easy. But then we don't just to the easy ones do we ! |

Sometimes though we have to be ruthless, my TV32 was certainly close to being a parts set, but it's rarity and finding replacement knobs saved it from that fate. I really don't like breaking up old sets, but if they yield parts to repair a better example, at least they have not died in vain. Now there is no one rebuilding CRT's any more, many rough sets are worth getting just on the chance they have a usable tube. Mark |

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
That top 'Pilot' set looks like it may have a 21" tube to me - the likes of CME2101 or 2104 a rarity now just what's needed for all those BUSH TV109s still lurking out there (I wish).

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
Second thoughts about the big screen set. I'm pretty sure now it is a Pilot "Spacemaker" model. The give away is the rear view, two pre-sets one side and four on the other. The tuner will be a fireball whereas a Sobell will have an R & A made unit. Likely to be a Pilot model PT650. The original CRT was a Mazda CME2101. 21" 110 degree CRTs are getting rare so even if the set is a write off you've got yourself a spare tube.

Re: TV finds in deepest, darkest Devon!
Hi all,
As FERNSEH says the top set is a Pilot PT650 I have one myself, huge lump and very different to look at. With my set unfortunately the Mazda CME2101 is a bit on the low side but otherwise the set works fine. Pastyboy, if you think your Pilot looks rough take a look at my set when I got it, a proper web-fest ! http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/pilot_s...ker_pt650.html Cheers, Marc. |
