Default Garrard 209 Platter slightly too low

Hi, The platter on my Garrard 209 seems to be slightly too low which is allowing the top of the idler wheel spindle to scrape against the inner top of the platter when set to 16RPM. This wouldn't usually be a problem but I recently bought some 16RPM records and would like to play them.

I have seen some felt washers on ebay meant for a Garrard 301 which could act as a shim unless anybody knows where to find proper ones for this turntable? If so where would the best place be to put them? i.e under the ball race, on top etc.

Thanks

It might be that the original motor mounts have perished and the whole platter has sunk down. Best to check. If needed and although you can't get replacements now, you can get rubber grommets that will suffice if they are stacked to the right height - from Maplins on online. If not, maybe the Ballrace needs packing under it.

The manufacturers manual is available from the banner at the top right of this page.

The ball race should have thrust washers on either side of the race, are they missing?

That deck is not like that it has a proper ball bearing hub
The problem is more likely to be the idler and pulley need lowering in height.

If the motor mounts had perished and sunk then it wouldnt affect the height of the turntable.

On these decks the shims and bearings are all part of the turntable bearing, and although they can be taken apart, they dont fall out like on the autoslim and later decks when you take the cam gear out.

You'd have to take the turntable bearing apart to fit shims.

You can raise and lower the pulley with the grub screws and you can raise and lower the idler itself using washers underneath but I don't think it's possible to adjust the height of the idler spindle

I found a diagram of the turntable spindle if it's any help. I was thinking the best place to shim it would be underneath the bottom thrust washer

Surely if you can raise or lower the idler then the spindle rises or lowers with it.

He means the idler wheel height can be slightly altered with washers but not the spindle it rotates on.

If you put washers under the idler wheel to raise it, you won't be able to put the circlip back on the top!

As said, you could move the motor pulley down a shade, I think it will be that, rather than the idler wheel that's scraping the underside of the turntable.

Update: Today I had the platter off to put a snubber over the switch contacts and after reassembling everything, it seems to run at 16RPM without a problem. I don't know if I accidentally did something to fix it but I shouldn't complain!

The rubber washer under the bottom thrust washer has probably become compressed and squashed flat after sixty years. It has probably flattened JUST enough to SOMETIMES cause the platter to sit low. It is labeled as "plastic washer" in the diagram of the centre spindle bearing. An oil-resistant O-ring of proper size is the usual replacement.
