Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
More ftrom Hungerford:
The first is a bit of a collapsed and dangly mess: a vertically-polarised BIII that has flopped so it points at the ground, and the remains of what looks like a *horizontally* polarised BI antenna. Which is strange: it points generally towards London. Could it perhaps be a pre-WWII Ally-Pally antenna? It's on the roof of a building in the High Street which could easily have once been a pub/hotel. maybe it was one of the first places in town to have shown TV? Who knows? Second is an age-tilted 9-ele BIII pointing at London. It looks a bit odd to me since the directors don't seem to have the expected 'taper' with shorter ones at the front. |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
On a trip to Maidenhead today I spotted a couple more vintage BI/III antennas on mid-1960s-build houses - both being the kind with a single halfwave dipole for BI and 'parasitic' BIII elements coupled to the BI dipole using the supposition that the BI dipole is a 3/2-wavelength on BIII.
These ae clearly for the BBC and ITV services from London. There was another one I spotted but couldn't take a pic as the homeowner arrived outside just as I was parking... Apologies for the poor pictures - cameraphones don't handle shooting-against-the-sky at all well. |

2 surviving Wenvoe Ch5 aerials in Colyton,East Devon. There's another one on top of the butcher's shop in the centre of the village.
Stockland Hill Ch9 would have been very strong there so possibly Westward TV reception was ok using just the band 1 aerials. |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
Here in Wimborne is a surviving vertically polarized BI 2 element aerial aligned for reception from Rowridge, I've been waiting for the bent guide to drop off for some years now but still it hangs on!

The Band 4/5 UHF aerial appears to be aimed at the rabbit hutch. J.

With rabbits it won't take long to get 625 of them.

That's a Telerection aerial using Delta matching possibly.
They were in Weymouth,so not too far away. |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
I saw this today while in Haverhill, Suffolk.
It is located on a building in Queen square off Queen street Haverhill. The square was built from what I can find out in the early 60's. The Band 1 aerial is pointing south towards I presume Crystal Palace, certainly south. The horizontal band 3 aerial I presume pointing approx NE from Haverhill would be for Mendlesham ch 11 H. The UHF aerial is pointing approx east so probably Sudbury transmitter. I don't know this area that well so any thoughts if this would be correct? |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
Nuvistor - I reckon you are correct.
As for the Band I aerial, I'm almost certain it is a 'Trumatch' era Channel B1 made by Antiference. A 'magic' design in my experience! - if anything is going to get you a signal it is one of them... The Band III design is from that common manufacturer 'Unknown' - unlikely to be an Antiference design as the ratio of the boom diameter to the element diameter is wrong for a contemporary design to the Band I one. Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
Another survivor in good nick not too far from where I live, this one is also aligned up for Rowridge and is for receiving 405/625 line transmissions I think? (others in the know will post more info on this I hope)
It is situated just off of Ringwood road in the Bournemouth area. Cheers

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
It's a combined Band 1 and Band 3 array. The X is for Band 1, channel 3 (Rowridge) and the shorter elements for Band 3, channel 11 (Chillerton Down).

Re post nos. 431, 432.
I agree. I think from the type of 'X' that it is a 'Telerection' combined Band I/III. |

The Band 1 & 3 aerial was the original installation. The UHF was added at a later date and mounted on the original pole. This was quite common if the VHF pole was strong enough. John. |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
As the two VHF TV aerials are pointing to Rowridge and Chillerton Down that small UHF aerial TV aerial is pointing to Stockland Hill? I think Bournemouth is out of range of Beacon Hill.

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
Hi Simon,
We have a repeater located at Parkstone, just checked it out using maps and that appears to be where it is aligned to. Thanks John and Steve, I knew somebody would be able to give me the correct info... Cheers

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
This Aerial i think is 405 line this is in a village called Parkeston near Harwich on the coast, most aerials don't seem to survive near the sea but from what I'm seeing on my walks around this area there are a few survivors. I will take more photos. The aerial in question is fastened to the chimney of the house on the left hand side of the low building with the white boarding. There is another aerial mounted on the building to the right of the low building just out of shot with what appears to be the same type of aerial. |

Re: 405-Line VHF Aerials 2013 to the present day.
Looking at the remains of the aerial and using a Google maps and street view it is pointed West towards Manningtree which had a transmitter on ch4 horizontal.

Hi All,
I've recently moved to Ware in Hertfordshire and this lovely combined band 1 and 3 aerial was spotted on next door's side of the chimney Cheers Andy
