A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
Furthering the old debate of to 'stuff' or not to...
Take a bog standard 50's valve set and replace all the resistors and capacitors with modern ones. The smallest you can find with the rating needed, I wonder how naked it would look under the chassis. |

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
If you could somehow use surface mount components the chassis underside would be almost empty!

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
An AA5 would help this shrinkage since its low HT would enable smaller everything than a 250V or more transformer type set.
Even wire ended 1/4 watt resistors are quite dinky- about the same as 1206 SMD with wires attached. For the best bare look a larger chassised early '50s set with octal valves would help

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
With a title like that I was expecting something profound, perhaps a unifying theory of the very large and the very small.
Hang on, Octal valves and SM technology.... |

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
Then imagine replacing the dropper resistor or mains transformer with a modern switched-mode power supply module!

And the bulky variable-capacitor with Varicap diodes... and the IFTs with ceramic filters....

And then everything with a few chips...........
Hang on a minute, that's a modern TV! |

Except it wouldn't have to be thrown away if it breaks

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
Look up "Fun Cube Pro Dongle"
It's the ground station receiver designed to go with the Fun Cube micro-satellite swarm. Howard's made a good job of it and it's a wide range everything receiver. David

Re: A thought experiment, may go beyond thought.
I actually fitted an SMD 0.1uf capacitor to two octal valve amplifiers.
It was the audio coupling component in the grid of an EF37A that was not fitted from new. I hid it in the top cap connector next to a smaller replacement for the 1 meg grid leak resistor. It looks original and now there is no risk of residual DC from a modern gadget making the compressed sound even worse. |

Perhaps a woodie with a pot on the tuning shaft, a Funcube and a Raspberry Pi, it would also need an LCD behind the pointer considering the tuning range of the Funcube. Rather OT from my original idea (all good fun though) I was thinking of the ultimate 'not to stuff' result. I might do it to my EKCO Festival (here is one with pictures https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=42845 ) as it has a quite full narrow chassis and would show the difference well. OT comment on SDRs... Their main problem is that you can see the intermodulation etc. not that you can hear it, if you could 'SDR' most top of the range analogue receivers I bet they would look a lot worse than a Funcube (let alone top notch SDRs). |

Why not replace the loudspeaker with mini headphones and we have done the complete circle. 1920-2017. J.

Aren't we the folk who slightly suck our cheeks in when someone upcycles a radiogram by painting it fuchsia and adding a streamer?
