Default Dial GPO number 12

Can anyone tell me how to tension the main spring as mine has unwound with just enough tension to just return, in beginers language please

My guess is that your main spring is broken inside it's metal container. It will still partly return even if it has snapped.

Fortunately the spring on the number 12 dial is interchangeable with the spring from a later 60s / 70s no 21 dial which are still fairly common. It is necessary to unbolt the dial shaft from the back and keep all the parts in order as you dismantle, reasembly is the reverse the hardest part is sloting the sping leaf back into it's retainer.

This gives information about dials: http://britishtelephones.com/tel%20auto%20b5125.htm. Obviously you won't have the equipment a Post Office engineer would have but the pictures at least show what goes where.
