Default Rediffusion televisions

Hi. I have just acquired a mid 60s dual standard Rediffusion television, which I am picking up this week. Does anyone know whether it can be used with a video recorder on the 625 line setting to get a picture, or does it have to run on the obsolete Rediffusion cable system, or is there some way of adapting it? Thanks, James.

Rediffusion didn't only do TVs for their "cable" service; they also sold and rented out ordinary plug-an-aerial-in type TVs.

If yours is one of the latter then it should work with a VCR.

If it is a cable only set you will need a Rediffusion frequency translator.

I would think, with a circuit, it would be fairly easy to fashion a baseband interface so that composite video and audio could be fed to the set regardless of whether it is cable or aerial. Of course safety isolation will have to be considered

Thank you, the way the Rediffusion cable system works seems most interesting, I believe that the channels where selected by a switch on the wall. Presuming I can get the set to work of course, what are the chances of getting a frequency translator or are they like gold dust?

There is a fairly extensive discussion of the Rediffusion cable system in this thread.

We don't know for certain yet that it isn't a Rediffusion-badged broadcast receiver. They certainly existed. Ask anyone who's been hit by a flying power button .....

In laws had this system where channels were selected by switch, using a Rediffusion set, but we lived close by with rediffusion network to our premises and it was possible to get a convertor ( I'd suspect modulator) to convert the Rediffusion signal to UHF.

Following my previous threads with the In-Laws Rediffusion TV that Colourstar started to re-cap and ended up with problems of picture ballooning I have found in the paperwork this , which could have fallen out of the set, (or maybe it belongs to something different). I have scanned, and red printing on a damp paper does not have good contrast so auto adjusted and its nearly readable. If anyone wants to better scan, or my larger source file, let me know and I will try.

hi ,have now picked up the television so thought I would put up a few pictures of it for those interested, It is a rediffusion only set , but is in amazingly good condition, unmarked cabinet and all appears original except a couple of valves. now all i need is to check it over and find a frequency translator.

We had an identical one at home in the early '60s. This is the only other example I've ever come across. Considered quite a luxury set at the time, I believe.
As a child, I amused myself by setting the system switch incorrectly to see the patterns generated.
