Default Telescopic aerials

Quite a few of my Hackers and Roberts have broken or missing aerials. Some are more than 1 metre extended. Plenty of cheap shorter ones available. Any suggestions for suppliers please ?

I bought a nice long aerial for my son's radio (not a Hacker) from Maplins last week for under £3. The fixing is different, and the lug by which the aerial is attached to the swivel is thinner that the original ( 2mm as compared with 2.5mm) but packing out with the thin brass washers fitted to the original antenna made it fit nicely.

Maplin supply LB10L which is OK on a Hacker Sovereign 2. It needs a bit of silicon oil to get it through the grommet but once in, it reaches the P-Clip anchor point comfortably and doesn't look too bad externally.

It doesn't have the knuckle that allows it to tilt though.

Telescopic aerial lengths can vary from a standard FM half dipole length to longer for SW.
On the Grundig Yacht Boy (Joy of Joys!) for example, it offers these two options within the one telescopic length.

The Poundland twin telescopic ones are quite long. It's worth spending a pound just to experiment.

Another vote for Maplins LB10. Out of stock and discontinued line, I ordered two in store on Wednesday and paid, The assistant phoned around and found a stash of them in some store. They arrived this morning, post free. They are 10mm dia 15cm long has M4 threaded hole in base. IIRC £2.99 each. Extended L 1.3 mtrs 51inch.

I picked up a few of these long aerials from Maplins. Going to have to drill out the hole to make it fit my VHF Herald.

That's a shame if you have to drill it. It doesn't seem as if it's going to fit the Sovereign 2 but with a bit of oil and a good push it does go in and then once in it's quite easy to manoeuvre it in to position.

Having said all that I've never seen a VHF Herald so it would seem they must have been a slightly smaller diameter.

Should be the same, but aerials did vary somewhat. Here's a list from Hacker of the telescopic aerials used in their early to middle period portables, from among the letters to dealers at the Hacker Group and with renewed thanks to Nick Arnold for the scan.

That's a handy list Paul! I've just measured the diameter of the Maplin one I put in a Sovereign 2 and it's 10mm, so a tight squeeze!

It went through the Perspex hole easily though - just tight in the grommet.

Just needed the hole in the perspex easing a little with a triangular file and happy days. Looks great.
