What is the value of this capacitor?
Hello, everyone,
Can someone tell me what this capacitor reads and what the symbol next to the four stands for? I've added a close-up image of the symbol. Thank you. |

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
My first question is 'are you sure it is a capacitor?' It could be a metal oxide varistor (used to supress overvoltage spikes, the '275' might be the voltage) or even a thermistor (used to limit the inrush current in a switch-mode power supply.
What is it out of? Are the any markings on the PCB where it was fitted? |

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
....and the mark after the 4 could well be a trademark. Likewise I think it either a varister or thermistor....favourite being the former rather than the latter.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
-594- was part of a Philips designation for a widely-used MOV series, it looks as though (squiggle) is whoever that bit of Philips components was acquired by.
I've a clutch of -594- 275V types with Philips yellow epoxy coating, they get used (with safeguarding fusing) in stuff here. MOVs turn up in a lot of devices, unfortunately as has been mentioned, they look like ceramic capacitors (in a way, they are a ceramic capacitor, but one that has been characterised for its breakdown behaviour, rather than capacitance- which will show a few hundred pF). Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Hello, everybody,
Thank you all for your very interesting answers. The component comes from a control module, which is from a Hoover Electron 800 washing machine. The component in particular is in between the two terminals pictured. As you can see, there are no markings on the board. Thanks again. |

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Its a varistor, spike suppression for the motor brushes. Designed to breakdown at a voltage over 275v AC to protect the module components.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Discrete components, this must be an old machine!! What are the numbers on the IC ?
I presume the aluminium cover doubles as a heatsink for an SCR. Keep us informed please.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
TCA1370?
TCA prefixes seem to relate to motor control chips of one sort or another.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
that's an epcos logo, (formerly Siemens & Halske). I agree its a 275V AC MOV and if it isn't split apart it'll be ok.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Thank you, Boater Sam. I believe you're spot on with that answer.
Thank you, Colin. That is very helpful. The machine dates around 1979-80, Andrew M6HNU. The IC numbers (and letter) are TDA1070P and yes, the aluminium cover acts like a heatsink for an SCR. Hello, Herald1360. It's a TDA1070P. Thank you, Kevin. That's great information. |

Could it be a Philips-assembled module by any chance? Any 12 digit markings on it, possibly starting with 4213? |

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
I can't find a datasheet for the TDA1070 anywhere.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Are you sure the IC is a TDA1070? IIRC that was an AM RF/IF chip used, amongst other things, in many Blaupunkt car radios in the 80s.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
The not too clear photo looks more like TCA than TDA.
It might be a proprietary part number.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Herald1360, the OP assures us it's a TDA 1070P

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
Question is................where are the data sheets for it? The interweb-thing draws a blank on it.

Re: What is the value of this capacitor?
If it's a proprietary device or just a standard part with an in house number, data would have to have leaked out from Hoover or their control pcb subcon for it to be around on the web.
If the pcb can be reverse engineered or a circuit found, the pinout may line up with some standard motor control chip.
