Panasonic FS90 issue
Got a second fs90 to pay about with as my own one is too good to fiddle with.
It had drop out issues which was due to static being picked up by the sound head. A dodgy connection block was at fault. The picture is nice and clear but it's experiencing faint ghost like lines that start off diagonally then slowly roatate completely clockwise in direction. There's about 20 odd lines in total but as the become more vertical they get thicker and fewer, then increase again as they become diagonal. Not much help I'm sure but I'm hoping it's something simple. I swapped out the psu for a good one thinking it might be a bad cap or interference but it's the same. Composite out also gives the same image. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks Steve |

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Is it present and moving when the video is in Pause? What about E-E signals?

Yes it's present during pause. I can't get it to show by taking a video with my phone but hopefully this pic will show the lines.

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Found this wile looking online at solutions.
All fine and well. But I'm no electronics expert and soldering isn't my forte. Last edited by Vauxfan2k; 10th Jan 2017 at 5:29 pm. |

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Go on, give it a go! Just to clarify, is the patterning present on E-E? All that means (Electronic-to-Electronic) is when the deck is not playing a tape and doing nowt other than passing a signal (e.g. tuner input), directly to a TV/ monitor (SCART/ RF output).
If it's only happening when playing back a tape, that narrows things down considerably.

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Only when playing a tape it seems.
Here's a couple of more pics showing it better. |

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Looks like it's probably that capacitor (C3311) in the HQ circuit. If you have access to an ESR meter you can have a little probe about in that area, or just blanket replace and see if that solves anything.
Soldering isn't really anything to worry about. Fault finding? Yes! Soldering? No!

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
Trying to locate that cap at the moment, I'm guessing it's far too much to ask that it's on the top of the board :/ problem is even when I find it, I don't have a replacement, don't want to rob it off my good fs90. My soldering gear is from the 70's (no joke) so I'm at least looking at buying new gear.

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
The cap itself will probably be labelled as 'C311' on the PCB. Hunt around the vicinity of where the cable from the video head amplifier (little silver box behind the video head), connects directly to the main PCB.
I'm not familiar with the internal layout of this machine, but there should be an area marked 'HQ' or even a small daughterboard. The cap itself (10uf/ 16v) you can get from anywhere (I tend to use Panasonic caps). As for soldering; for small jobs even a cheap £5 30W iron from a DIY store will suffice. Add a solder sucker, 60/40 solder, and maybe a reel of soldering braid and you're good to go..for under a tenner!

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
It's not on the top side of the main board, so il have to have a go at removing it to get to the underneath tomorrow. Thanks

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
I have kind of solved this by turning the noise filter to edit. If set to off or on the lines reappear. Guess I can live with it specially since the dropout is sorted.

Re: Panasonic FS90 issue
There are several small electrolytics around the 1H delay IC on the delay pack which itself is on the sub-luminance board that get cooked, they are in a small metal can/box, It's usually C3501, C3506 and C3516 that give trouble, but also C3510, a miniature 3.3µF electrolytic can give similar symptoms.
In view of the age of these machines and the amount of stripping down to gain access it is probably better to replace all of the small electrolytics in this area now.
