Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
I am repairing a GP42 - SP25 Mk11 deck. I have fixed the mangled tonearm but the cartridge (ESR 900) sounds awful (I bodged in a BSR X5M which sounded fine). Was the ESR fitted to the new RP?
I have found a 'replacement' for the ESR here - https://www.eltim.eu/index.php?action=article&aid=21579 - does anyone know if these are any good? I haven't come across Tonar before. Thanks.

Apologies - that should read ERC 900! I wasn't able to edit the post or title - did I miss something?

It's the BSR X5M that you will need - ideal for the GP42. They are now in very short supply and will fit the removeable head easily.

Re: Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
Tonar are a Dutch cartridge / Styli wholesaler. Their stock appears to be a mixture of NOS and modern copies. Certainly the BSR SC11M I got from a UK supplier came in a Tonar box, but was original BSR.
Who actually manufactures things like the copy Ronette 105s etc goodness only knows! |

My understanding, through my European Trade sources, is that they are made in Italy.

Re: Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
I have one of those Italian Ronettes - I found it to be pretty awful. I am leaning toward Edward's advice but I don't have a mount for the X5M. I can hardly return the GP42 to its owner with the cart attached with blu-tak, as it is just now! Any ideas as to where I can get just a mount?

Many Members have needed to fit a BSR X5M to the Garrard 2025TC which cannot use the standard mount, so there may be some spare via this Forum.

I might just be able to help you there. Is this is the one? Or does the X5M have a front mounting that is bigger and more square?

That does indeed look like a suitable clip.

As my out-of-focus photo of the clip reflects my skills with a camera, for reference the rectangular slot on the front of the clip measures 5/16ths x just under 1/8th inch.

Please look at this thread for a neat way to do this.

I think that's the very fellow - many thanks Barry - again! I have taken a pic of the front of the cart - I don't know if that actually helps.

Darn! You need the one with the bigger square hole, which I haven't got, sorry!

Re: Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
That BSR cartridge has a screw hole in the top as does the headshell so no need for a clip

Re: Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
Yes, but it will need a spacer - some washers. If all else fails, I have at least one of these - but it will need an exploration up the ladder into the furthest reaches of my loft.....

Re: Replacement for ERC 900 cartridge in a Hacker GP42
Of course it does! Thank you Peter - and thanks Edward but I am sure I can find a suitable spacer - no need to go climbing! I shall report back.
