Default Pye P59CR car radio

I found this at a car boot sale recently, according to a web search it dates to 1953.
It has a valve lineup of EF41, ECH42, EF41, EBC41, EL42 & EZ41.
I have found a circuit diagram, but it is not clear on the battery polarity.
The power lead is a screened cable (screen to chassis) indicating negative earth, but I am sure most cars of the time were positive earth?

It is certainly a massive & very heavy beast, and seems very unusual in having three shortwave bands in addition to the usual MW/LW bands.

This set is the 12 volt version, there was also a 6 volt model.
I would like to fire it up, but obviously want to be sure of the polarity first!

I don't think the polarity matters... The schematic I have shows :

A non-synchronous vibrator and a valve rectifier (EZ41), so the HT polarity will not depend on the input polarity

The power input filter capacitors are listed as 'reversable' so they will work on either polarity

Obviously the heaters aren't going to care.

Thanks Tony,
looking at the circuit again, I noticed that the input filter capacitors are reversible.
I noticed the power consumption is listed as 2.8 amp, so should be fine on my 5a bench PSU.

It has been over 40 years since I have had a valve car radio, probably this has not been powered up for even longer!

I can confirm that they are not polarity sensitive, I rebuilt one for one of my cars a couple of years ago. Regards Ian

I powered it up, but it appeared to be dead. vigorous operation of the on/off switch got the dial lamp and valve heaters working, but no HT.
Removing the vibrator can and giving it a few sharp taps on the bench got it working and the set came to life pulling in Talk sport on MW, however after a couple of minutes the main electrolitic went S/C

At least I know that the set is a viable restoration project, and should be fine after a recapping session.
